Well, the blues are back and we’ve been rummaging far and wide to pull together a whole hour of them for this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling. So if you like the blues then I recommend you relax, lean back in a comfy chair and let’s enjoy some great blues together.

We kicked off with the title track of the 2010 album by Mark Doyle & The Maniacs and then we went back nearly 50 years for Elmore James’ ‘Stranger Blues . . . .

For those who found their way to join us Down at Kokomo’s this week, there was the usual cheery welcome and some very good company. Of course, there’s always our playlist to ensure the evening goes well and we certainly managed to keep everyone in good spirits through to midnight, kicking off with Howie G Condor and ‘The Fix’ . . . .

The Fix – Howie G Condor
Black Pepper – Roy Lee Johnson
Hip Teens Don’t Wear Blue Jeans – Frank Popp Ensemble
Ask Anybody – The Ad Libs
You Said You Loved Me – Deon Jackson
Hard Times – Boz Scaggs
What You Won’t Do For Love – Natalie Cole & Peabo Bryson
At The Party – Hector Rivera
Fever – Gene Harris & The Three Sounds

We didn’t manage to entice Jazzy G off his bar stool until it was closing time, but he looked like he’d had a good time. As ever, we knew it was nearly tomorrow when Miss Rosie got busy clearing the bar and tables, so we played out this week with Gene Harris and one of our favourites from him . . . . . his take on the classic ‘Fever’. Then it was all over and just time to say thanks for your good company and hope that we’ll see you again soon Down At Kokomo’s . . . . until then . . . . have fun!

Cruising halloween 2

Listen here to this week’s show:

.
Well, the stores around these parts are clearly just itching to get their Xmas displays ready to tempt us, ever earlier, to stock up with more than we need and spend more than we intend. All that’s stopping them is another event . . . . Halloween. With the nights definitely drawing in, there’s been a distinct chill in the evening air around the Grand Duchy and a few misty moments too. All the right ingredients for Halloween and a suitably atmospheric intro to our spooky adventures for this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner.

So, this week, when we called by in the Cruise Mobile, we were all wearing our Halloween costumes and our playlist was fairly dripping with spooky, mystic and magic tracks. We kicked off our spooky cruise from Jumpin’ Gene Simmons’ ‘Haunted House’ and we never looked back . . . . except for a slight shiver and tremble, as we cruised on through the night with The Cadillacs and their 1959 Josie 45 ‘Peek-A-Boo’ . . . .

Cruising into the night . . . .
Haunted House – Jumpin’ Gene Simmons
Peek-A-Boo – The Cadillacs
Casting My Spell On You – Johnny Otis
The Shadow Knows – The Coasters
Witchcraft (For Your Love) – The Temptations
Spooky – Classics IV
Jack the Ripper – Screaming Lord Sutch
Night Of Fear – The Move
Black Cat – Kate Meehan
My Baby Must Be A Magician – The Marvelettes
Trick Or Treat – Otis Redding
Witchdoctor – Don Lang & His Frantic Five
Love In A Cemetery – Lord Kitchener

Cruising where the shadow knows . . . . .
Ghoul View Commercial – John Zacherley
The Supernatural – Seppo Valjakka
I Ain’t Superstitious – Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds
I’m Your Witchdoctor – Mark Doyle & The Maniacs
Black Cat – Brian Auger
Black Cat Rag – Willie Lane
It’s Gonna Take Magic – Shane Fenton & The Fentones
Creepin’ Up On You – Status Quo
Trick Or Treat – The Groovie Ghoulies
It’s Your Voodoo Workin’ – Charles Sheffield
Voodoo Mademoiselle – September Jones
Voodoo Voodoo – Mike Sanchez (with Imelda May)
Voodoo Love – The Souvenirs
Ghost Busters – Ray Parker Jnr

Even our Girls & Guitars feature had a Halloween theme this week, because we had a song about a black cat from Australian singer, pianist and guitarist, Kate Meehan. She was born in Hobart, Tasmania and after singing with the local choir, she learnt to play guitar and went busking around Adelaide for a few years when she left High School. She got a real taste for Chicago blues and recorded her first album in 1998 with the Kate Meehan Blues Band. But, no Halloween would be complete without the mystic presence of a black . . . . which just happened to be the title of the track we chose from her 2002 album, ‘Soulshaker’.

All too soon, our witching time was running out. So, to get us home safe and sound from our spooky adventures and vanquish all the dangerous spirits, we joined Ray Parker Jr and the ‘Ghost Busters’. Then, we were parking up the Cruise Mobile for another week and rather hoping that you enjoyed our special cruising playlist sufficiently to be enticed back again next week. That’s when we plan to swing by in the Cruise Mobile . . . . same time same place with a seat saved especially for you . . . . and the promise of even juicy gems and tasty treats. So, until the next time we go Cruising with The Commissioner . . . . remember . . . . have fun!

It was certainly a great week for new blues offerings and we struggled to find time to fit in everything that we could have played, but there’s always next week. We did keep some spaces in the playlist for some scratchy blues and some old favourites, but we kicked off with a great track from The Mick Clarke Band called ‘Shake It Up’ which is the title track of their excellent new album . . . . and there was plenty more . . . .

I Dare You – Husky Tones (Time For A Change – 2015)
Raising Hell – Zac Harmon (Right Man Right Now – 2015)

We closed this week’s show with the opening track from a new album by Zac Harmon. The album’s called Right Man Right Time and we chose the powerhouse number, ‘Raising Hell’. Then, we were quickly putting the smiling picture of the station boss back on the wall and waving a cheery farewell . . . at least until next week. So, you’d better be ready same time same place next week, when once again The Blues Come Calling. Until then . . . . have fun!

Cruising with The Commissioner - poster #2

Listen here to this week’s show:

Well, a hectic week here at Cruise Control with the return of The Cruisettes from their cruising through Germany, some excellent gigs back home here, a trip to France and, in case you were wondering, yes, they still have Charles Aznavour and Johnny Halliday albums in the record racks there!

It was a good week for birthdays, with Chuck Berry, Steve Cropper, Elvin Bishop, Manfred Mann and Tom Petty all celebrating somewhere during the past days. We got to hear from some of them in the show, but not all (sorry). The music historians noted that this week in 1958 saw the last ever recording session by Buddy Holly, which took place at Pythian Temple Studios, New York City.

One choice this week was inspired by Thom Hickey and his blog The Immortal Jukebox. He mentioned a Janis Joplin track called ‘One Night Stand’ which comes from her album Farewell Song and it has the notable attraction of being one of the first production credits for Todd Rundgren and it’s also notable for having accompanied by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band . . . . nuf sed! (http://theimmortaljukebox.com/2015/10/16/riding-high-on-bob-dylans-jukebox-warren-smith/).  But, before that we hit the road with Richard Berry & The Lockettes with ‘Heaven On Wheels’.

Cruising to who knows where . . . Guy Mitchell
Heaven On Wheels – Richard Berry & The Lockettes
Reelin’ & Rockin’ – Chuck Berry
Brown Eyed Handsome Man – Roy Orbison & The Teen Kings
Can’t You Hear Me Calling – Johnny Otis
Crazy With Love – Guy Mitchell
Need Your Lovin’ Kiss – Conway Twitty
The Mexican – The Fentones
I’m A Moody Guy – Shane Fenton & The Fentones
Cindy’s Birthday – Johnny Crawford
One Night Stand – Janis Joplin with the Paul Butterfield Blues Banderja_lyytinen_live_in_london_cover_hires
Boogaloo Down Broadway – Steve Cropper
Can’t Even Do Wrong Right – Elvin Bishop
It’s Hurts Me Too – Erja Lyytinen
Johnny B Goode – Peter Tosh

Cruising with friendly faces . . . .
Blood Of Oblivion – Rainy Daze
Temptation Eyes – The Grass Roots
Midnight Walk – Karena K
Red Cadillac & A Black Moustache – Bob DylanRobert Cray
Grazing – Spring
It’s Growing – Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers
Ain’t Gonna Tell You – Frank Wilson
Say No Girl – The Spandells
Wrap It Up – Robert Cray
Starting The Hurt All Over Again – Brenda Holloway
Hit The Road Jack – The Swing Cats
Flip Our Wigs – Milt Trenier & His Solid Six
Let’s Stomp – Bobby Comstock

There was no contest for who would be the focus this week of our Girls & Guitars feature, because Finnish blues/rock guitarist Erja Lyytinen was was on our gig list this past week . . . . and she was an obvious choice. She delivered a cracking set on her current UK tour and to give you a taste of what we heard, we chose a track from her latest Live in London album, which includes the old Elmore James favourite ‘It Hurts Me Too’.

A big thanks to Jamie Dell’Apa (https://www.facebook.com/Saturday-Night-New-Orleans-Radio-625773220767239/) for suggesting Milt Trenier & His Solid Six with their 1953 RCA single ‘Flip Our Wigs’. But sadly, that brought us to that point where Mr Merlot was indicating, in his own inimitable fashion, that it was time for us to turn the Cruise Mobile for home. So as we swing around with some squeals from the wheels and made our return trip in the company of Bobby Comstock and his classic ‘Let’s Stomp’.

As all good things have to come to an end, we were soon parking up the Cruise Mobile, putting away the records and CDs, then saying our farewells . . . . very much hoping that we’ll have some more of your good company next week when we’ll call by in the Cruise Mobile, same time, same place, all ready to take you Cruising with The Commissioner. Until then . . . . have fun!

Despite a busy schedule, we were intent on being Down at Kokomo’s in good time for the evening’s good company and music. There were plenty of familiar faces there too and a fine playlist to ensure everyone’s spirits were high. Kicking off the late set was Mook Loxley with an old Mitch Ryder favourite, ‘Jenny Takes A Ride’ and, like Miss Rosie’s bar skills, it all flowed nicely from there . . . .

Love & HappinessMook Loxley
Jenny Takes A Ride – Mook Loxley
Shake A Tail Feather – The Five Du-Tones

Drowning In A Sea Of Love – Eva Cassidy
Love & Happiness – Marc Broussard
The Sidewinder – Tamiko Jones
Another Friday Night – Jeff Golub

.
While we were been enjoying the sounds on our playlist, we were watching as we headed for the midnight hour. All too soon, Miss Rosie was busy clearing the bar and tables, which is a sure sign that it’s almost tomorrow. So, with little time to spare, we said our farewells and played out now with Jeff Golub who’s anticipating another Friday
Night. So, until the next time we meet Down at Kokomo’s . . . . have fun!

Listen here to this week’s show:

.
Well, the Autumn chills seem to have finally arrived in earnest, but we were ready with a very warm welcome and we rolled by in the Cruise Mobile in the hope that everyone was in a groovy mood and ready to party.

One of the joys of the week was revisiting the TV documentary about the famous Muscle Shoals recording studios and musicians . . . . and to prove we were paying close attention, we dug out the first record cut in those now famous studios . . . . that was Arthur Alexander with ‘You Better Move On’. Our viewing also caught up with the documentary film ‘The Wrecking Crew’ and the film is well worth a look, especially if you’re in any way interested in the 60s music scene in America. There are plenty of fascinating ‘Wrecking Crew’ stories and a few myths shattered along the way, including finding out just how many artists didn’t play the instruments on their own records.

If you ever wondered what the Allman Brothers sounded like when they started out, then we were able to dispel the mystery with something from The Hour Glass . . . . and one of their recordings from 1967 . . . . ‘Out Of The Night’. But, before that we got the Cruise Mobile rolling along with the sounds of Artie Lewis and his Oklahoma 45 ‘Supposin’ . . . .

Cruising in good company . . . .
Supposin’ – Artie Lewis & The Terry Tyler Orchestra
Get With It – Pearl Galloway
I Ain’t Mad At You – The Duke Robbilard Band
Problem Child – Roy Orbison & The Teen Kings
You Gotta Go – Bobby Hebb
The Shape You Left Me In – Gene Simmons
A Little You – Dakota Staton
Reason To Be – Grainne Duffy
Maydell – The Allman Brothers Band
Out Of The Night – The Hour Glass
Her – Zoot Money
You Better Move On – Arthur Alexander
Only When You’re Lonely – The Royalettes
Hey Jude – Toots & The Maytals

Cruising where we please . . . .
East Of The Sun – The Living Music Box
We Gotta Get Out Of This Place – Arthur Brown
Rad Gumbo – Little Feat
I Got Loaded – Lil’ Bob & The Lollipops
Lovingly Your – Dean & Jean
Surfers’ Stomp – The Marketts
Mr Tambourine Man – The Byrds
It’s A Cryin’ Shame – The Five Keys
I Still Love You – Fats Domino
Teenage Wedding – Johnny Angel
My Oh My – Billy Floyd
Ooh Baby – Deon Jackson
Hands Off – Betty Everett
I Don’t Know What You Got – James & Bobby Purify
I Need Your Lovin’ – The Diaboliques

Our Girls & Guitars feature this week focused on a new album release by Irish singer and guitarist Grainne Duffy. She hails from County Monaghan in Ireland, but she’s over in the UK now to promote her new album. If you catch her on tour, you might just hear her playing tracks from her 2015 Live album, including ‘Reason To Be’.

After clocking up plenty of miles on our cruise this week, time caught up with us . . . . . but all good things have to come to and end and time caught up with us. So, we parked up the Cruise Mobile, and started putting away the records and CDs. We very much hope that we’ll have some more of your good company next week when we’ll call by in the Cruise Mobile, same time, same place, all ready to take you Cruising with The Commissioner.
