Goin’ South . . .

Listen here to this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling:

Well, I arrived in good time to wish a big bluesy welcome to one and all . . . and I was feeling mighty chuffed, because last week’s show got some pretty enthusiastic feedback . . . for which I’m very grateful. But, I was not lingering long before I was getting us into this week’s selection of the best of the blues with Slash with another track from his latest blues album. It features a list of famous faces and this week’s choice was a version of ‘Key To The Highway’ which had Dorothy Martin (of LA band Dorothy) up front on vocals. Then, in a much more laid back style, a friend of the show . . . Giles Robson . . . was up next with a track from his latest release ‘Seven Blues Classics’, which is just what the title says. It was my album of the week and my first choice was Giles with guitarist Manny Fizzotti on Sonny Boy’s ‘Nine Below Zero’.

Alastair Greene is no stranger to the playlists here and he was back with his ‘Standing Out Loud’ album, which includes a song, written and first recorded by William Harris back in 1928. It’s had a long list of covers since then . . . but, I warned not to let Alastair fool you with his delicate opening to ‘Bullfrog Blues’.

Good Intentions
Key To The Highway – Slash & Dorothy (Orgy fo The Damned – 2024)
Nine Below Zero – Giles Robson (Seven Blues Classics – 2024)
Fear Is My New Roommate – Chris Cain (Good Intentions Gone Bad – 2024)
Bullfrog Blues – Alastair Greene (Standing Out Loud – 2024)
Goodbye You – Dai Price & Alan Dunn (Bon Bon – 2016)

Pinetop’s Pick
Boogie In The Park – Joe Hill Louis (We All Gotta Go Sometime – 2023)

Lookin’ Back
What The Missus Misses – Big Harp George (Cooking With Gas – 2024)
Walkin’ Blues – Giles Robson (Seven Blues Classics – 2024)
Lookin’ Back – Rocky Athas (Shakin’ The Dust -2024)
Goin’ South – Memphis Royal Brothers (ft Charlie Musselwhite) (Memphis Royal Brothers – 2024)
Blow Wind Blow – Jimmy Rogers & The Jimmy Rogers All Stars – (Blues Blues Blues – 1970)
You Make Me Want To Dance – Robert Finley (Age Don’t Mean A Thing – 2016)
GR’s Locomotive Blues – Giles Robson (Seven Blues Classics – 2024)

The playlist had a great favourite from the catalogue of Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson . . . it was his number ‘Lookin’ Back’ and given a bit of a twist by Rocky Athas on his excellent ‘Shakin’ The Dust Album’. Then, we we’re heading to the deep South for some blues from the Memphis Royal Brothers, who boast some legendary Memphis names among their members, including the Memphis Horns and on this occasion the much celebrated Charlie Musselwhite bringing some vocals and harmonica to the Brothers’ new self titled album which is due for release in July. This was ‘Goin’ South’.

Now, when Giles Robson was sitting in here recently, he made the point that every self-respecting blues harp player has to have a train song in their repertoire and on his latest album ‘Seven Blues Classics’ Giles gives us his . . . or at least one of his! So, the last choice from my album of the week was Giles with his ‘Locomotive Blues’. But, just before it arrived there was a big thanks for your good company this week and the hope that we’ll meet again, the next time The Blues Come Calling. Until then . . . remember . . . have fun!
