As I gave one and all a big bluesy welcome, I made the point that there must be something in the air, because there seemed to be new blues releases everywhere. So, there was plenty to choose from and opening the show this week was Toronzo Cannon with an easy favourite from his new album ‘Shut Up & Play!’ and I was not done with it, because it was my album of the week . . . so there was more later. Then, there was another of those excellent summertime releases. This was something that had been getting plenty of plays since it arrived, courtesy of Rocky Athas and his new album ‘Shakin The Dust’, which includes that a much covered Calvin Carter song . . . first released by Billy Boy Arnold back in 1956 . . . ‘I Ain’t Got You’.
If you like high octane North Mississippi Hill Country Blues, then keep an eye on the tour dates for the duo, ‘Too Bad Jims’. They are Little Victor and Son Jack Jr. who brought a preview copy of their new recording . . . ‘Miss Maybelle’. It proves to be a very good example of what to expect if you catch them live. . . . and I’m hoping that track will get released sometime soon, so everyone can enjoy it.

Now, when Mike Thomas of The Cadillac Kings was on the show here a few weeks back, he made the point that the blues can be just as much fun as any other music genre. Making that point well was Big Harp George with ‘Cookin’ With Gas’. It’s the title track of his latest album and if you get the chance, check out the web for his video of that number
A quick glance at the studio clock told me that, sadly, our blues time together was almost gone, but I was determined to squeeze in a celebration here for T Bone Walker, whose birthday was this week and I thought I’d play out with his classic ‘Two Bones & A Pick’ . . . but before that there was my customary big thanks for your good company this week and I was, already, looking forward to us meeting up again, the next time The Blues Come Calling.
