Listen here to this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling:

.
Well, despite the temptations of the sunny weather, you could be sure we would be back, bright and breezy with a bundle of the best of the blues, just when The Blues Come Calling. There were a few timely reminders in our playlist too, with something from Paul Carrack, who was celebrating his birthday this week, and best wishes to Alan Nimmo for his early return to full health.

We did well this week in the realms of ‘down home’ blues with offerings from Big Bill Broonzy and Jo Ann Kelly. For those whose taste in blues veers more towards the rootsy style, there was a little gem from Delta Moon’s new album ‘Cabbagetown’.

Amongst the new releases, we picked out tracks by Bobby Messano (from his excellent album ‘Bad Movie’), Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos (from their self titled album), Taj Mahal & Keb Mo (from their forthcoming album ’TajMo’), Dave Hunt (multi-talented showcase ‘100 Horses’) and a great Australian lady of the blues, Kate Lush (‘Let It Fly’). There were more, but we ran out of time . . . so, more gems for next week. But, before that we kicked off with a favorite by The Nimmo Brothers and the blues came spinning out from there . . . .

Give Me StrengthAnthony Rosano & The Conqueroos
I’ll Be Back Someday – The Nimmo Brothers (Coming Your Way – 2001)
Just A Little Lie – Paul Carrack (It Ain’t Over – 2014)
American Spring – Bobby Messano (Bad Movie – 2017)
Show Me The Money – Buddy Guy (Skin Deep – 2008)
Baby Please Don’t Go – Big Bill Broonzy (Blues Is My Business – 2006)
Give Me Strength – Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos (Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos – 2017)
Don’t Leave Me Here – Taj Mahal & Keb Mo (TajMo – 2017)

Pinetop’s Pick
Can’t Be Satisfied – Jo Ann Kelly (Do It & More – 2009)100 Horses - Dave Hunt
.
Lay It On ‘Em
I Wonder – The Jimmys (Live From Transylvania – 2016)
21st Century Man – Delta Moon (Cabbagetown -2107)
Evil Gal Blues – Big Time Sarah & BTS Express (Lay It On ‘Em Gals – 1992)
100 Horses – Dave Hunt (100 Horses – 2017)
Pack It Up – Kate Lush (Let It Fly – 2017)
Tore Down – Benny Turner (Tore Down – 2015)
.
The second half of the show opened with some swinging blues from The Jimmys and a track you can find on their latest album ‘Live From Transylvania’ Kate Lush Let It Flycalled ‘I Wonder’. Then we dipped back for something from Mississippi’s own Sarah Streeter, or as she’s probably better known, Big Time Sarah. She came in with a superb version of that much covered song, ‘Evil Gal Blues’ from her 1992 album ‘Lay It On ‘Em Gals’.

I declared an interest in the last two choices for our playlist this week. I am a long time fan of Texas bluesman Freddie King and it so happened that Australia’s Kate Lush included his ‘Pack It Up’ song on her new album ‘Let It Fly’. So, that was an easy choice and a cracking version too. Then, it was the turn of Freddie King’s brother, Benny Turner, to take us home with his full-tilt version of ‘Tore Down’. Just before that, there was just time to thank everyone for their good company on this week’s show and to hope we’ll meet up again, the next time The Blues Come Calling. Until then . . . remember . . . have fun!
