I want to shout about it . . .

Listen here to this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling:

Well, a big bluesy welcome to another edition of The Blues Come Calling with a very tasty slice of the best of the blues. This week’s selection goes to confirm that there’s plenty of great new blues releases coming along some very fine gigs in prospect, but we haven’t forgotten our roots . . . as will be revealed in our playlist.

We kicked off with two guitarists who have been members of John Mayall’s Bluesbreaker . . . Coco Montoya with a track from his new album ‘Hard Truth’ and birthday boy Eric Clapton with that much covered Bobby Bland number ‘Further On Up The Road’. Some time back, Eric Clapton’s band included the great Albert Lee, who was on our giglist this week and delivering an excellent show. His anecdotes included a story about his time with Eric and a reminder of his time as a member of Chris Farlowe’s Thunderbirds and their version of ‘Stormy Monday’

We showed off some contrasts in the blues with the urban swagger of Bernard Allison’s version of his daddy’s song ‘Bad Love’, the rural feel of The Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band’s latest album ‘Front Porch Sessions’ and the jazzy, late night blues of Delbert McClinton’s calling ‘Pulling The Strings’ and from the very current to a 50s release by Lowell Fulson whose birthday it was this past week.

Further On Up The Road
I Want To Shout About It – Coco Montoya (Hard Truth – 2017)
Further On Up The Road – Eric Clapton (Crossroads 2 – 1996)
Stormy Monday – Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds (Sue single – 1965)
Bad Love – Bernard Allison (Times Are Changing – 1998)
We Deserve A Happy Ending – Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band (Front Porch Sessions – 2017)
Pulling The Strings – Delbert McClinton (Pick of The Litter – 2017)
Don’t Leave Me Baby – Lowell Fulson (Rockin’ The Jukes – 1998)

Pinetop’s Pick
No More Doggin’ – James Cotton (Blues Shuffle – 2015)

All Around The World
Delta Lowdown – Elvin Bishop (Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio – 2017)
All Around The World – Taj Mahal & Keb Mo (TajMo – 2017)
See See Baby – Joe Bonamassa (Live at The Greek Theatre – 2016)
The Honeydripper – Roosevelt Sykes (Roosevelt Sykes Vol.8 – 2005)
Who Are You Listening To – Matt Andersen (Honest Man – 2017)
Don’t Know What It Means – The Tedeschi Trucks Band (Live from The Fox, Oakland – 2017)

Elvin Bishop was back with a nice instrumental, ‘Delta Lowdown’, from his latest album Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio and there was another taster from the forthcoming album by Taj Mahal & Keb Mo with ‘All Around The World’.

From Joe Bonamassa’s welcome return with ‘See See Baby’ . . . an old Freddie King favourite . . . we dipped back into the archives for something from pianist Roosevelt Sykes and the number that gave him his nickname and a hit, ‘The Honeydripper’.

A new release by Matt Andersen is always likely to gain some attention here and his latest single ‘Who Are You Listening To ‘ made a good addition to our playlist, which we finished with a seven minute opus from The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s album ‘Live at The Fox, Oakland’. Then it was all over, barely time to say our farewells and hope to meet again the next time The Blues Come Calling. Until then . . . . remember . . . . have fun!
