I got sumpin’ for you

Listen here to this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling:

Well, the enticing entreaties of the festive shopping experience were simply no competition for our listening activities, in preparation for this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling. In the event, we had no trouble filling our hour of the best of the blues and big thanks to the record labels and artists for helping with some more previews of future releases. This week we featured The Billy T Band with their forthcoming album ‘Reckoning’, a forthcoming album titled ‘Static in the Wires’ from singer-songwriter Martin Harley along with bass player Daniel Kimbro.

I’m sure I’m not alone in enjoying seeing The Rolling Stones back at the top of the charts with their Blue & Lonesome album, from which we picked another little gem for this week’s playlist. We didn’t forget that, if he was still around, the great Guitar Slim would have been celebrating his birthday this week. So, we pulled out his 1955 Specialty release ‘I Got Sumpin’ For You’ to mark the occasion.

We had plenty of new releases to capture our attentions this week, including The Lucas Haneman Express with their ‘Tearing Up The Rails’, Finland’s own Slim Butler with his latest album ‘Bad Intention’, The Schwartz Fox Blues Band with their limited edition album ‘Sunday Morning Revival’ and kicking everything off with a great opener by The Hexmen from their latest album ‘King Bee’.

Holding On – Jeff Healey (Holding On – 2016)

We went digging deep for some scratchy blues and came up with, possibly the best known song by Delta Bluesman, Freddie Spruell, his Bluebird recording made in April 1935 and featuring Carl Martin on second guitar on ‘Let’s Go Riding’. Pinetop’s Pick featured guitar maestro Lonnie Johnson and we pulled out a ‘seasoned’ favourite from Eddie Kirkland with his classic ‘Man Of Stone’

All too soon the clock on the wall signaled that time was catching up with us. So, we played out with another fine performance from Jeff Healey and the title track ‘Holding On’ from Jeff’s new album. Then it was all over. Nothing left to do but tidy up the records and CDs and head for the door, but not before thanking everyone for their good company this week and hoping they will all be back again the next time The Blues Come Calling. Until then . . . . remember . . . . have fun!
