Hey sugar . . .

Listen here to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner:

.
Well, around the Grand Duchy, the natural environs have turned from green to various shades of brown, whilst in the commercial world things are bright shades of red, white, Cruising #2006silver and gold . . . and more besides. The festive messages from friends and family have started to appear at Cruise Control and everyone seems to have a ‘wish list’ somewhere to ensure they don’t get what you really want to give them. Unlike our Cruising playlists, where we are reliable, if not predictable, in delivering the music we all like here.

This week’s music choices for our Cruising with The Commissioner adventure were not a little influenced by some great moments from our radio listening and our giglist, which this week included the excellent Mike Sanchez & His Band. It all came together rather too easily as a result, which was unnerving, and even more unsettling was that The Cruisettes never got back from their festive shopping spree in time for the show. . . . which made the tidying up afterwards a lot easier.

So, we rolled round at the appointed hour with the customary invitation to jump aboard the Cruise Mobile, and we kicked off down the road with the great saxman J.T. Brown leading The Broomdusters on ‘Round House Boogie’ . . . .

Our  Girls and Guitars feature this week which focused on Melanie Mason, who we’ve heard from before on the show. She hails from Washington DC and has gained a fine reputation on America’s blues-rock scene as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader. To show off her talents we featured her take on that Freddie King classic ‘Tore Down’.

When it comes to funky stuff, our good pal Wendel Williams knows a thing or two and recently he has been getting rather enthusiastic about the band Papa Grows Funk . . . and good stuff it is too! So, with little persuasion, we included their very swinging ‘Slapjack’.

We were at London’s famous 100 Club this past week for a rocking good time with Mike Sanchez & His Band and several of the numbers from his setlist found their way onto our playlist, including rare originals that fetch some ‘real’ money among the collectors. So, enthused by the music, we nearly missed Mr Merlot’s theatrical arm waving to signal the moment to start heading for home on our cruise. But we got back just in time and accompanied along the way by the fabulous Little Richard, whose birthday it was this week, and whose ‘Heebie Jeebies’ was only just ending when the Cruise Mobile rolled to stop.

Rest assured, we’ll be back same time, same place next week with the Cruise Mobile with another fine mix of the music we like here and ever hopeful of your good company too. So, until the next time we go Cruising with The Commissioner . . . . remember . . . . have fun!
