Hooked . . .

Listen here to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner:

Well, it’s been a week of frenetic activity around here and the Cruise Mobile has been in overdrive for an extended period as we criss-crossed the home counties in search of friendly faces and fine dining establishments. Good fortune was with us and everything fell into place, almost as though it was well planned . . . like our Cruising playlists. But, we were back in time for some ‘fine-tuning’ of our music choices for this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner.Cruising #2030 -header

The Cruising Crew are all around and we know this, because our good pal Amigo, out there on the fringes of the Northern Home Counties, gave us some timely feedback on last week’s show, for which we showed our appreciation with something for him, in the form of The Griffin Brothers with ‘Move It On Over’. Another long time member of the Cruising Crew, the much esteemed Johnny Alpha, extended his influence with a little treasure . . . a ‘Big M’ 45 by Jimmy Sedlar with ‘Shorty’s Got To Go’.

Our ‘loose connections’ this week had a trio of tracks with a common link . . . something by the great texas bluesman Freddie King, a little number called ‘Down In Dixieland’ and a version of the classic, ‘Delta Lady’ . . . . all to celebrate Leon Russell and all his great music. But before that, we set off on our Cruising adventure with Big Danny Perez & his R&B band and ‘Swing & Rocket’ . . . .

Much Later – Ike Turner & His Kings of Rhythm

Now, some may be surprised to learn that a midst the junior-brownchaos here, there are some rare moments of order and our Girls & Guitars feature was one of those. We focused on American singer and guitarist, Eilen Jewell and her 6th album titled ‘Queen Of The Minor Key’ which includes our selected track ‘Hooked’.

By now, you may have realised, we’re no respecters of musical frontiers on our cruises and from time to time this tests the virtuosity of Mr Merlot and The Cruisettes, but this week they turned (just in time) in grass skirts and rather loud Hawaiian shirts to anticipate any Cruising Crew members listening in Pahoa, Hawaii, and we found a very suitable track for the purpose!

Mr Merlot’s sage-like advice led to a denial that Junior Brown’s ‘Highway Patrol’ had anything to do with any recent ‘on the road’ encounter between Mrs TC and the forces of law and order. Mrs TC did not appear with any refreshments during our cruise, so the advice might need some more finessing. But, time was soon running out and we had to turn for home with something suggested by watching again the movie of Tina Turner’s life-story which focuses, not unnaturally on Ike Turner, and, despite his personal traits, Ike produced some great R&B in his prime, like ‘Much Later’.
With a measure of surprise for some, we arrived home safe and sound and in time to park up the Cruise Mobile, dust it down and leave it ready for our next musical adventure. So, until the next time we go Cruising with The Commissioner . . . . remember . . . . have fun!
