Listen here to this week’s edition of The Blues Come Calling:

.
Well, we’re back with a big bluesy welcome and an other armful of great blues . . . . some you may know, some you may want to know more about and a few previews of forthcoming releases that just may capture your interest too. With the minimum of introductions, we kicked off with a real bounce, courtesy of Albert Castiglia, and a track from his latest album ‘Big Dog’, then we conjured up echoes of Tommy Johnson and Canned Heat with Colin James and something from his ‘Blue Highways’ release . . . ‘Big Road Blues’.

The ladies of the blues were well represented on this week’s playlist, with tracks from Rebecca Downes, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Sari Schorr and Zoe Schwarz. Now, it wasn’t exactly planned like that, but the final choices just happened to fall that way . . . . which was no bad thing at all.

A big thanks to Rebecca Downes and Eddie Martin for sharing preview copies of their new albums and a respectful nod in the direction of Mike Zito for indirectly prompting a visit to latest album by The Royal Southern Brotherhood, who are on their European tour at present with a few UK dates this month.

Philadelphia’s David Bromberg and his band was backrebecca-downes-be-live-2 again with an old Jimmy Reed track from their latest release and if you want some more, look out for the album ‘The Blues, The Whole Blues & Nothing But The Blues’.

I owned up to the fact that when I first heard the album by The John Doe Trio, I assumed it was a band from the deep South of America, but they are really from the ‘Garden Of England’ (Kent) and it is a most excellent album too. It’s packed with tracks that draw very successfully on many influences in the blues and with outstanding musicianship here defies the fact that they’re a three piece band. The name The John Doe Trio is delightfully explained by eddie-martin-flyer-web-banner-1the band as reflecting the notion that they’re “all about the music” rather than the name or personality of any one member . . . and their album, ‘Stranger’ comes highly recommended here.

It was all too easy to lose track of time, as we happily worked our way through the playlist choices, but time was definitely slipping away when we reached for Zoe Schwarz’s ‘I’ll Be Yours Tonight’ album to play out this week. Zoe was joined by Blue Commotion on ‘Take Me Back’, leaving just a moment to say thanks for your company this week. So, until the next time The Blues Come Calling . . . . remember . . . . have fun!
