Mr Boogie’s back in town . . .

Listen here to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner:

Well, we rolled by in the Cruise Mobile at the appointed hour and feeling pretty cheery, because the san returned to the Grand Duchy and we had some real treats to bring you in our Cruising playlist. So, with more than our usual measure of enthusiasm, we saved a seat especially for you, just so we can all go Cruising with The Commissioner.

In our customary fashion, we ventured across musical frontier, in and out of time zones Cruisin' 71and jumping genres, all in pursuit of the best in rock, soul and ‘real’ rhythm and blues. Indeed, our cruising route map took on that familiar journey down to New Orleans, where we found local guitarist, singer and band leader, Dave Ferrato, and I’m ever grateful to our good pal Jamie Dell’Apa for pointing me to Dave and his music. We lingered a little longer in the Crescent City to catch up with Huey ‘Piano’ Smith & The Clowns for the originals Frankie Ford’s hits ‘Sea Cruise’ and ‘Roberta’.

Our traveling across frontiers took a turn for the 21st parallel when we pressed the button on the control panel marked ‘island hopping’. . . . . and it was that location that featured in a 1957 UK rock & roll song by Joan Savage ‘Lulu Rock-A-Hula’. But, we kicked off down the road in the company of the legend that is Johnny Otis and his take ‘Let’s Rock’ . . . .

Well, our gig list this past week included a live show by Tasha Taylor, the daughter of soul man Johnnie Taylor. Not only is she an impressive singer, but she’s also a mean guitarist. So, an excellent candidate for our Girls & Guitars feature. Apart from being a singer, guitarist and songwriter, she has the additional accolades of being featured as an actress in several episodes of the TV series ‘House’, as well as being a featured vocalist on Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi’s live shows as The Blues Brothers.

Mr Merlot was a bit distracted towards the end of cruising time and we were a bit late in noticing the end of the show creeping up on us. But, we definitely ended our cruise in high spirits and with some firey R&B from the great Mike Sanchez & his band with a cover of the Ike Turner rocker ‘She Can Rock’. Then it was all over, so we said our farewells, with the promise that we’ll be back, same time same place next week with a seat saved especially for you, just so we can all go Cruising with The Commissioner. Until then . . . . remember . . . have fun!
