Ooo wee . . . .

Listen here to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner:

Well, the social diary has been fairly full this past week, with some friendly faces getting touch and some celebrations along the way. So, there was plenty of good cheer to spur us on in pulling together the playlist this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner.Cruising #95

There were a few ‘thank you’s’ too, because we’ve caught up with some excellent choices, while listening to some of our favourite radio shows. Larry Grogan, Jamie Dell’Apa and Matt The Cat all sent us off rummaging in the Cruising Library for particular artists and songs, although not all of them got into this week’s playlist . . . . so, they’re waiting in the pending tray now.

We anticipated Bill Medley’s imminent birthday and celebrated by playing his first single as one of The Righteous Brothers and their first chart hit . . . ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’. But, before any of that, we kicked off our road trip with Alvin Red Tyler & The Gyros with ‘Snake Eyes’ and we’re following fast with something from Billy Gayles along with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm and ‘Just One More Time’ . . . . and why not!

We mentioned groups from Liverpool during the show and there happened to one in this week’s focus for our Girls & Guitars feature. This was the all girl band from Liverpool, The Liverbirds, who were one of the few female Merseybeat bands of the 60s. They featured two singer/guitarists in their line up, Valerie Gell and Pamela Birch, along with bassist Mary McGlory and drummer Sylvia Saunders. During their time together, they released two albums and several singles and one of those singles got into the German charts. It was a cover of Bo Diddley’s ‘Diddley Daddy’ and it was our choice by them.

A little theme emerged from playing a track by Bob ‘Froggy’ Landers, which also featured Willie Joe & His Unitar, who was also heard on Rene Hall’s hit ‘Twitchy’. That led to a few ‘toons’ that featured legendary guitarist and producer Rene Hall, including Larry Williams’ ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy’, Ritchie Valens ‘Come On Let’s Go’ and Little Richard’s ‘Bama Lama Loo’. Then time ran out and we had to park up the Cruise Mobile for another week.

So, we said our fond farewells, knowing that we’ll be back to call by for you in the Cruise Mobile, same time, same place, next week, with a seat saved especially for you, so we can all go Cruising with The Commissioner. Until then, remember . . . have fun!
