What’s it gonna take . . .

Listen here to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner:

.
Cheered by the daytime sunshine, we arrived in the Cruise Mobile at the appointed hour with a bright and breezy welcome to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner. There were plenty of reasons to be cheerful too, including some encounters with friendly faces and some additions to our giglist.

This week, we welcomed back our guests The Shake Cruising #2035 mrand Arfa Pinetop with their choices for our playlist. The Shake brought along something from The Brothers & Sisters and Pinetop’s Pick went back to Chicago for a live performance with bluesman, Luther Allison. Later, our Doo Wop Stop included some fine examples by The Visitors and The Nitecaps.

We picked out a couple of pieces from the Chess label, including a great piece of musical story telling from Chuck Berry in ‘The Jaguar & The Thunderbird’, but the real inspiration came from Thom Hickey and his Immortal Jukebox blog (https://theimmortaljukebox.com/2016/02/09/bo-diddley-rhythm-rules-rhythm-rules/), where he wrote a great piece on Bo Diddley, saying that he remembers laughing out loud the first time he heard the opening lines of ‘Who Do You Love’ . . . . so we took another listen. But first, we set off with Jerry Bradford leading the vocals with The Spades on their 1961 Rebel 45 ‘Hey Hey’.

There were a few anxious moments last week, when some of the Cruising Crew thought we’d forgotten our Girls & Guitars feature. So, to comfort the easily unnerved we pulled forward and focused on all-girl band ‘Girlschool’ . They started out in South London, and after several changes of line up released their debut album ‘Demolition’ in 1980. We chose a track from that album with Kelly Johnson on lead guitar on their version of the hit for The Gun . . . ‘Race With The Devil’.

We geared up for a rocking finale that caused Mr Merlot to collapse from near exhaustion. But, we waved an bottle of fine wine under his nose and he revive quickly. Then we parked up the Cruise Mobile and gave it a quick polish, ready for next week, when we hope you’ll be back, same time, same place, to go Cruising with The Commissioner. Until then . . . . have fun!
