Shuckin’ & jivin’ . . . .

Listen here to this week’s show:

Well, it’s no great insight, but some things creep up on you with a sideways shuffle and with so many other things happening, we hadn’t given it much thought. But, according to the records (the non-vinyl ones), we have confounded the predictions and even surprised ourselves, because with this week’s show we entered our fifth year of Cruising with The Commissioner. Maybe we set our expectations fairly low at the start, but we seem to have arrived here almost unscathed and still very much enthused by the music. Cruising #83

The origins of our musical adventures can be traced back to the weekly ‘get togethers’ with a few teenage pals to play our favourite records. So, the music has always been important, but so too has been sharing the music in the good company of others. So, this week’s show provided more of the same, along with our welcome guests, Johnny Alpha and DJ Leyton Rocks.

The Cruisettes turned up in their party gear and Mr Merlot was very much in evidence with a fine selection of libations. Meanwhile, yours truly was supervising this week’s playlist, which included some popular tracks from previous shows, some suggestions from members of the Cruising Crew and a goodly selection of new tunes (well, new to our playlists) to tantalise your music taste buds and tempt a little rhythmic motion. So, we set off on our musical adventure in the company of Candy & The Kisses and ‘Smokey Joe’s’ . . . . .

Our Girls & Guitars feature this week focuses again on Finnish singer and guitarist Erja Lyytinen, who started playing guitar at the age of 15, and cites among her influences singers like Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor and Bonnie Raitt. She cut her first album for Bluelight records back in 2002, since when she’s carved out a reputation for herself playing across America and Europe. . . . and you can judge for yourself with our choice from her 2002 album ‘Attention!’. . . . ‘Jumpin’ From Six To Six’. Meanwhile, our weekly dip into the scratchy blues bag pulled out a little gem by pianist Forrest Sykes, who’s is a rather obscure figure. But, what we do know is that he ably demonstrated his scorching piano playing on a 1948 recording for the Aristocrat label, titled “Tonky Boogie”. . . . so that was our choice for the playlist.

Well, with the benefit of the very good company of Johnny Alpha, DJ Leyton Rocks and, of course, the Cruising Crew, we found ourselves launched safely into our fifth year of Cruising with The Commissioner. So, as the novelty of that subsides, rest assured we’ll be back in the Cruise Mobile, same time same place, next week with a seat saved especially for you. But, until then . . . . have fun!

  1. The Shake says:

Wow Happy Birthday and we have had many happy returns!
Great show Commissioner and it was good to hear the bearded one once again on the airwaves

    • Ta muchly Shake. Those trips to the vinyl vault with DJ Leyton Rocks have obviously left a lasting impression on him. He insists on dressing in exotic garb for his presentations . . . . . I blame you Shake!

  2. The Vikster says:

The Vikster raises a glass of something celebratory, Happy Birthday to the show TC

    Absolutely cracking tunes tonight TC

    • Thanks for your good company this week. We had fun here and are mildly surprised to have got into our fifth year, but it feels good indeed. Glad you enjoyed this week’s music choices. Have fun!

  3. DJ Leyton Rocks says:

Yours truly adds a bit of popsike to this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner. Sadly, in terms of the show I was out gallivanting with Tiff 🙂
