Trick or treat . . . . .

Listen here to this week’s show:

Well, the recent stormy weather seemed to provide a suitably atmospheric intro to our spooky adventures for this week’s Cruising with The Commissioner. So,, when we called by in the Cruise Mobile, we saved a seat and one of our Halloween costumes for each of the Cruising Crew and pulled out some of the best mystic, magic and weird tracks for our creepy cruise. Our playlist was fairly dripping with spooky, mystic and magic tracks and along the way, we found our good pal Johnny Alpha, who was back in his familiar haunt, around Killer Diller Korner, with a suitably unnerving track about the activities of  the ‘Zombie’.
Cruising #194
We rather surprised ourselves by finding some appropriate soul sounds for Halloween, including Otis Redding with ‘Trick Or Treat’ and Wilson Pickett with ‘Mr Magic Man’. It worked well and The Cruisettes arrived in their Halloween outfits, but fortunately we’d taken the precaution of locking the broom cupboard securely. Undaunted, we started off our spooky cruise in the re-assuring company of Ray Parker Jr and the ‘Ghostbusters’ and with barely time for a shiver and tremble, we followed up with The Cadillacs and ‘Peek-A-Boo’. You can check out the rest here:

Peek-A-Boo – The Cadillacs

Killer Diller Korner . . . . with Johnny Alpha

Cruising through the mists . . . .

Magic Carpet Ride – Steppenwolf
The Spell I’m Under – The Courage Brothers
Witchy Woman – The Hollies
Strange Magic – ELO
I’m Your Witch Doctor – Them
Gonna Get My Voodoo on – Jimmy Elledge
Voodoo Voodoo – Lavern Baker

Well, there was just too much temptation as we pulled together our playlist, including our scratchy blues choice this week, which reflected the blues connotations of a little dealing with the devil. This came from Homesick James and his 1962 cover of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads Blues” . . . . . a story of dealing with the devil down at the crossroads and selling your soul for great guitar skills, but it doesn’t work for everyone . . . . as some the Cruising Crew can testify!

We ducked out from our spooky theme briefly for this week’s Girls & Guitars feature, which was in part a tribute to American rock guitarist Jan Kuehnemund, who is best known for her trademark guitar-work with girl group, Vixen. We chose a track from their 1990 ‘Rev It Up’ album, titled ‘How Much Love’ and played it by way of our tribute to Jan, who passed away earlier this month.

As the mists cleared, we found ourselves in familiar and re-assuring surroundings, as we headed for home and getting us home safe and sound from our spooky adventures was Lavern Baker and her 1958 Atlantic single ‘Voodoo Voodoo’. Then the rattling tin cans told us that the sands of time had finally run out for us on our spooky cruise. So, we parked up the Cruise Mobile for another week, in the hope that  you might have enjoyed our cruising playlist sufficiently to be enticed back again next week . . . . when we’ll call by for you, same time, same place, with the promise of even more rock, soul and ‘real’ rhythm and blues.

So, until the next time we go Cruising with The Commissioner . . . . . have fun!
